The Golden Gate
My mind is slowly slipping
Fading, falling, urging me
To slip away and travel
Beyond the golden gate
There is no time for delay
Come with me hasten quickly
While I make the one-way ride
To the land where I’ll be fre e
The journey there is waiting
A powerful friend is calling
To travel quickly on my way
Beyond the golden gate
The invitation stronger now each day
This world cannot restrain me
Repress my urge to quietly slip away
Unlock the golden gate!
There is no more time for talking
Thinking, reasoning, walking
No way to try to square the sum
The moment has arrived, now come
Chapter 36
In this countrified area, men in pubs were noticeably tamer and fights were rare. The women did not appear to be as highly sexed as those Terry had left behind in his rough hometown. They were more discrete, but the Devil was still doing his best to use women to ensnare him. On this occasion, the Devil decided to lay his snare in the shape of a married sister in her twenties. Gina had noticed a missing button on Terry’s shirt and offered her sewing services. Calling at her home as arranged he handed her two shirts. They shared coffee and biscuits. It was all very cosy, and Gina insisted he kiss her goodbye to show his appreciation. Well, it would have been churlish to refuse. As she was a married sister from the Kingdom Hall, there was no chance she would want more than a kiss. The kiss lasted longer than expected, and Terry’s appreciation started to show. He paused for air and managed to make it to the door.
Terry waited a couple of weeks before arranging to collect an additional shirt left with her, to give her time to cool down. A delightfully preened Gina opened the door and invited him in, insisting he wait while she ironed the shirts. She played Simon & Garfunkel as they drank white wine. she turned up the volume when the song got to making love in the afternoon, up in my bedroom,
Gina studied Terry. “What do you think of the lyrics?”
Terry was non-committal and just shrugged, so she played the song again, instructing him to listen carefully. He would have left then, but she was busy checking for missing buttons. He wanted to stay and see how the scene played out, but a lifetime of wrestling with the Devil motivated him to action, and he extricated himself from her grasp. Her eyelashes moved over her sad, doe-like eyes.
“Don’t you like me, Terry?”
“Oh, very much - it’s just that I have to go. I only called by for the shirts,” he explained, as he concentrated on getting his breathing back under control.
Gina spoke in a whisper. “Oh, Terry, I thought you called to spend a little time with me.”
Terry gulped hard and looked towards the door. “We are friends, but I ought to go and get on with things.”
Gina placed her hand on his neck. “Why don’t you stay so we can get on with things together?”
It was a very
